Political parties had requested EC to delay polls in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti

New Delhi, Jan. 17 (Delhi Crown): The Election Commission of India (ECI) postponed the Punjab Assembly polls by six days to February 20, after Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and most of political parties requested it to delay the elections in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.

Lakhs of Dalit devotees from the state are scheduled to visit Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh from February 10-16 for Guru Ravidas Jayanti.

The political parties had requested the ECI to postpone the voting as lakhs of people would not be able to cast their votes on February 14, the original date the EC had announced a few days back, as they would be in Varanasi.

There are around 32% Dalits in Punjab, and play an important role in deciding the government formation in the state.
