New Delhi, Nov.10 (Delhi Crown): Five police officers posted at the Rohini Jail in North-West Delhi have been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police for attempting to extort Rs. 200 crore from a business family.

The Special Cell and the EOW of the Delhi Police had been on the case since July this year, following a complaint lodged by the wife of a billionaire businessman, who is also in jail.

The arrested officers include two Superintendents of Police (SPs), two deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) and one assistant superintendent of police (ASP).

They have been identified Sunil Kumar and Surinder Chandra Bora (SPs), Mahender and Laxmi Dutt (DSPs) and Prakash Chand (ASP).

According to the EOW, the accused were using the services of a jailed conman identified as Sukesh Chandrasekhar. They have been taken on remand for further interrogation.

The Delhi Police claimed that Chandrasekhar had distributed around Rs. 20 crore of the extorted money among the jail officials as gratification for acts such as allowing him the use of smart phones illegally in jail.

With two earlier arrests in the case, the number of arrested jail staff has risen to seven.

“They were actively involved in dealing with the main accused, Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who was earlier arrested in the case pertaining to extortion and cheating of Aditi Singh w/o Sukhvinder Singh of Religare Finance,” said an EOW official.

The cops had recently filed a charge sheet under MCOCA and invoked other laws against Chandrasekhar, his girlfriend, Leena Maria Paul, and 11 other people.

In August, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had confirmed the seizure of 16 luxury cars, a beachfront bungalow in Chennai, Rs. 82.5 lakh in cash and two kilograms of gold belonging to Chandrasekhar and Leila.
