The CEIR project was launched in recent months in Delhi, Mumbai and Maharashtra’s licensed service areas (LSAs) in a phased manner to facilitate blocking and tracing of lost and stolen mobile phones.
As per the reports from CEIR system, requests for blocking 8,315 and 11,848 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) have been received till March 20 for Mumbai and Maharashtra LSAs, respectively.
The traceability data for 4,586 and 8,317 IMEIs have been made available to police of Mumbai and Maharashtra, respectively, to facilitate the recovery of mobile phones handsets, said Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan in Rajya Sabha on Friday.
The CEIR is a multi-stakeholder system where respective stakeholders, including Department of Telecommunications, Telecom Service Providers, Police, Mobile phone manufacturers and mobile phone subscribers have a limited access as per their defined roles and responsibilities.
Currently, this includes the information to the subscriber about the make and model corresponding to IMEI of his/her mobile handset, information to mobile phone manufacturers about genuineness of IMEI during import of consignment of mobile phones etc.
