Modi requests the farming community to “pardon” him

New Delhi, Nov. 19 (Delhi Crown): In a move that took the country by utter surprise, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced to withdraw (repeal) all the three farm laws passed by the Indian Parliament last year.

In his televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi asked the countrymen (farmers) to pardon him as, he added, “his government couldn’t convince the farming community about the benefits of the three farm laws.”

“We will complete the process of the repealing all the farm laws in the winter session of the parliament later this month,” said PM Modi while addressing the nation on TV.

Thousands of farmers, mainly from northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, etc., had been protesting against the three farm laws for past one year. The protesting farmers had been camping on various border points around Delhi state. The Centre Government had denied them entry into the national capital.

Several rounds of talks between the protesting farmers and the Centre Government had failed break the ice.

The announcement came on the day of a Sikh festival “Guru Purab”, which is celebrated on a grand scale by the Sikh community, hailing from Punjab state.

The announcement also assumes significance even as it came a couple of months ahead of the Assembly elections in the northern states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, besides Uttarkhand, Goa, and Manipur.

On Friday PM Modi is slated to visit Uttar Pradesh to address a couple of political rallies in Uttar Pradesh to garner political support for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
