Minorities body issues notices to Delhi Mayors, Commissioners over meat ban
Summons them to appear before it on April 8
New Delhi, April 7 (Delhi Crown): Chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) Zakir Khan on Thursday issued notices to all three Commissioners and Mayors of the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) over reports of the closure of meat shops during Navratri across the national capital.
Khan also directed the three Commissioners and Mayors of the MCDs to file a status report regarding the closures of all meat shops, and appear in person before him on Friday (April 8).
The DMC chairman took cognizance of news reports observing that the three Mayors were acting like a “law unto themselves”.
The three MCDs in Delhi are ruled by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Their Mayors have called for shutting down all meat shops during the nine-day fasting period “Navratri”.
“What they are calling for violates the basic free guaranteed in the Constitution. Such proclamation can also incite and encourage hoggish behaviour on the ground. Senior authorities and courts should step in and put a stop to such behaviour. Observing this we hereby serve upon you to explain forthwith on which laid down rule & regulation, it has been decided by you to ban/shut down the meat shops during Navratri,” said the notices.
