New Delhi: Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai parliamentary constituency, R. Sudha (Congress) became the latest victim of “Unsafe Delhi”, when a biker came close to her, snatched her gold chain and coolly drove away.

Delhi is often described with acronyms like “Crime Capital, or as a city highly unsafe for women.

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Police’s Chanakyapuri police station at around 6.00 a.m. when the woman parliamentarian was having a morning walk along with another lawmaker from the Rajya Sabha.

According to R. Sudha, the police’s reaction to her complaints was “lethargic”.

As per the latest reports, the chain-snatcher was still at large, and the Delhi Police were doing their every bit to trace him with the help of CCTVs installed in the high-security zone. The incident seems to have come as a first challenge for the new Delhi Police Commissioner Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh who assumed charge only four days ago.

The woman MP lives in the “Tamil Nadu House” located in the high-security zone surrounded by several embassies and high commissions. The chain-snatching took place near the Poland Embassy’s Gate-3 and Gate-4. The woman lawmaker looked highly traumatised after the incident.

R. Sudha told media persons, “Today morning, around 6:00 a.m., I went for a walk with another woman Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu near the Embassy area. A person wearing a helmet approached us and snatched my chain, tearing my clothes in the process. He fled on a vehicle at a slow speed. I raised an alarm, but no one came to help me.”

She added, “After that, I proceeded to the government guest house. On the way, I encountered police personnel, so I informed them about the incident and asked them to apprehend the culprit. However, they simply asked me to file a complaint and didn’t even alert other police stations. I then went to the Chanakyapuri police station and filed a complaint. I have also emailed the Home Minister and the Speaker to take action regarding this incident. I hope they take action.”

“What’s shocking is that I walked through a highly secured area with no security presence. The ‘Double Engine Sarkar’ talks about women’s safety, but where is it? It has failed to provide safety for women. The police response was lethargic.”
