Delhi minister Gopal Rai announced to launch the campaign against open garbage burning

An attempt to reduce pollution in national capital

New Delhi, Nov. 9 (Delhi Crown): The government of Delhi on Tuesday announced that it would launch a month-long campaign from Thursday (November 11) against the open burning of garbage.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that this was being done as part of the ongoing drive to reduce pollution in the national capital. Rai asked people to file their respective complaints on the ‘Green Delhi’ app on seeing any instance of open burning of garbage.

He said that 550 teams from 10 departments have been given the responsibility to ensure that the campaign against open burning of garbage in Delhi is a success.

Rai also reiterated his government’s written demand to the Centre to organise a joint meeting of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan to discuss the issue of crop residue burning.

Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated to the extent that it is still in the “very poor category”. Stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab is being cited as the primary reason for high levels of air pollution in the national capital. (Delhi Crown)

A comprehensive study undertaken by IIT-Kanpur in 2016 said that eight to nine percent of municipal solid waste (MSW) is burnt in the national capital during the winter, while in the summer months; it was seven to eight percent.

The study had then called for “an integrated pollution control approach in the region” to help improve air quality.

Based on the comprehensive source apportionment study, the sources of PM10 and PM2.5 contributing to air quality are different in the summer and in winter.
