Exports to begin from this season
New Delhi, Jan. 11 (Delhi Crown): India has got the approval to export mangoes to the U.S. from this season onwards, said an official in the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.
The export of Indian mangoes had been restricted by the U.S. since 2020 as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors were unable to visit India for inspection of irradiation facility due restrictions imposed on international travel because of Covid-19 pandemic.
From this season onwards, i.e. from March-April, consumers in the U.S. would have access to excellent quality mangoes from India.
India will be able to export mangoes to the U.S. in the mango season commencing with the Alphonso variety of mangoes. Notably, there is a huge acceptance and consumer preference of Indian mangoes in the U.S. as India had exported 800 Metric Tonnes (MTs) of mangoes to the U.S. in 2017-18 worth 2.75 million U.S. dollars.
Similarly, in 2018-19, 951 MT mangoes worth 3.63 million U.S. dollars were exported to U.S. and 1,095 MT of 4.35 million U.S. dollars of mangoes were export in 2019-20. As per estimates received from the exporters, the export of mangoes in 2022, may surpass the figures of 2019-20.
