Election Commission announces Assembly polls in 5 states
New Delhi, Jan. 8 (Delhi Crown): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra on Saturday announced the schedules of Assembly elections in five states in seven phases between February 10 and March 7.
Elections are to be held in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.
The CEC added that counting of votes will take place on March 10. Final results are expected to be announced on the same day, as voting will be held through EVMs.
As per the election schedule announced, Uttar Pradesh shall witness polls in all the seven phases, while Manipur will have voting in two phases, and the rest three states in one phase each.
The CEC said that in the wake of sudden Covid surge in the country there shall be a complete ban on road-shows, bike or motorbike rallies, or even a march on foot by politicians or their supporters till January 15. He added – “A review meeting will be held on January 15 and thereafter decision will be taken if public rallies could be allowed in the run up to the Assembly elections.”
