New Delhi, Jan. 1 (Delhi Crown): There were a few residents of Delhi among the 12 persons who died in the stampede in Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu late last night, confirmed a local senior cop.

The identities of those dead have not been released so far.

The local police officer confirmed that most of the dead were residents of Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, while one hailed from Jammu.

A major stampede occurred at the shrine at around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday after argument broke out between two groups of devotees.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital. Lakhs of Hindu devotees visit the Mata Vaishno shrine on the first day of every year to offer prayers.
