New Delhi: A Patiala House Court on Monday (Oct. 30) imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on lawyer Umesh Sharma for repeatedly not appearing in a false and frivolous case filed by him against a senior journalist accredited with the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

Umesh Sharma is the same lawyer who had made the New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA), or Patiala House Bar Association, one of the defendants in a similar false and frivolous case.

Due to his waywardness and picking up fights regularly with lawyers inside Patiala House Court, lawyer Umesh Sharma has lately eaned the sobriquet “The Goon Advoate” among the lawyers community inside the Patiala House Court premises.

Hearing the case on Monday, judge Niharika Kumar Sharma took a strong cognizance of the fact that lawyer Umesh Sharma was not appearing in the case filed by himself, and also not supplying the suit-copy to the journalist against whom he had filed a false and frivolous case.

Taking a strong view against lawyer Umesh Sharma, judge Niharika Kumar Sharma imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him. The next date of hearing of the civil suit is in March 2024.

Sources in the legal fraternity say that lawyer Umesh Sharma’s wife, son and daughter (all lawyers) had thrown him out of their house located in Moti Bagh, after he was found “womanising”. For the past three years, lawyer Umesh Sharma, who originally hails from Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, has been living in a one-room accommodation in an unauthorised colony in North Delhi.

He is involved in several cases of domestic violence, matrimonial disputes and property-related disputes with his wife and two children.

Incidentally, he has made his wife one of the defendants in the false and frivolous civil suit filed before the court of judge Niharika Kumar Sharma.

Appearing on behalf of the journalist in the said civil suit, Advocate Shahroz Bakshi argued before the judge that the Plaintiff, i.e. lawyer Umesh Sharma, was simply wasting the precious time of the honorable Court as he hasn’t been appearing in the said civil suit ever since filing it. Advocate Shahroz Bakshi also appealed to the judge to impose a heavy fine on lawyer Umesh Sharma for showing disrespect and colous and careless attitude towards the honorable Court.

Taking Advocate Shahroz Bakshi’s arguments on merit, judge Niharika Kumar Sharma imposed the fine of Rs 5,000 on lawyer Umesh Sharma which shall be deposited by him in the NDLSA at Patiala House Courts.
