New Delhi, Dec. 11 (Delhi Crown): Amarlata Sangwan, the MCD Councillor from Timarpur ward in North Delhi, on Saturday quit the Congress party and joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta.

Amarlata had won MCD election from her ward on a Congress ticket.

She had also unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly polls held in 2020 on Congress ticket.

The next MCD elections are slated to be held on March-April next year. The contest seems to be between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), even as the Congress’ presence appears to be negligible in the national capital.

In the 2017 MCD elections, the BJP emerged victorious in all the three MCDs – the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).

The BJP had won 181 of the 270 MCD wards and secured control of all the three MCDs. In NDMC the BJP had won 64 out of 103 wards, in SDMC it won 70 of 104 wards, and 47 of 63 in the EDMC.

On the other hand, the AAP could win only MCD 48 wards, and the Congress only 30.
