AQI in Delhi worsened after Diwali night

New Delhi, Nov. 6 (Delhi Crown): The rising air pollution levels to “Severe” and “Hazardous” categories in Delhi is leading to major ailments even as there is a sudden rise of patients suffering from headaches and breathing problems, medical experts in the national capital said on Saturday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi worsened particularly after Diwali when people indulged in bursting firecrackers in large quantities despite a ban imposed by Delhi Government and in the adjoining areas by the neighbouring state governments.

Dr Naresh Trehan, Chairman and MD and Medanta Hospital said that everyone will suffer from air pollution.

“People are complaining of headaches, breathing problems especially people with asthma and lung ailments. Young children are very vulnerable and this pollution can affect their brain development,” he was quoted as saying on Saturday.

He further said that his hospital was full of patients. “So this is a difficult phase for us. Every year we face this problem but failed to address or correct it,” he added.

Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS Dr. Ambuj Roy said that elderlies, patients with lung and heart problems, COVID-recovered patients, and pregnant women are very much susceptible to such kind of poor air quality. Air pollution is now a much bigger threat than COVID.

Dr Dhiren Gupta of the Paediatrics Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi said – “In past 10-15 days we have seen sudden rise in exaggeration of symptoms in those who were asthmatic and allergic. They are requiring more inhalation therapy. Right now, we have 3 patients admitted with severe asthma attack.”

He further said that this is the season of respiratory syncytial virus, “so children who are getting respiratory tract infections because of pollution, are facing more respiratory problems. There is also irritation in the eyes.”

Dr Gupta also said that the PM in the air value is so bad that it’s affecting the eyes, causing irritation and it also leads to the clouding of the brain. Babies & children become irritable because of the pollution & pollution is quite severe.
