AAP blames BJP-ruled EDMC for Gazipur landfill fire
Atishi says BJP solely responsible for the 3 mountains of garbage around Delhi
New Delhi, March 28 (Delhi Crown): The Delhi unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday squarely blamed the BJP-ruled East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) for the huge fire that broke out in the Gazipur landfill site during the day.
AAP leader Atishi Marlena told media persons that those (read BJP leaders) running the EDMC and its officials very well know that the Gazipur garbage dump site is self-combustible, as a lot of methane gas is emitted from it round-the-clock.
She further alleged that during the past 15 years, since the BJP has been in power in EDMC, it failed to find any lasting solution to this burgeoning problem.
“Around 2000 tonnes of garbage is dumped in the three landfill sites around Delhi every day, thus posing serious pollution threats to the national capital. A recent TERI report had stated these 3 landfill sites had led to water-pollution and air-pollution worth Rs 450 crores till date,” added Atishi, an MLA.
She also said that the residential areas around Gazipur landfill site have to bear the brunt round the year as such fires at the huge garbage dump site are a regular affair.
“The huge fire that broke out today will fill the nearby houses with smoke, which will remain there inside the houses for the next 2-3 weeks. Despite very well knowing about the garbage being self-combustible, the BJP-ruled MCDs have failed to take any concrete steps to find a lasting solution,” added Atishi.
