23 persons nabbed so far for role in Jahangirpuri clashes: Delhi CP Asthana

New Delhi, April 18 (Delhi Crown): As many as 23 persons, belonging to both the Hindu and the Muslim communities, have been arrested so far for their role in Saturday’s Jahangirpuri clashes in North-West Delhi, confirmed Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Monday.

He also said that nearly 100 people have been identified, and efforts are being made to track them down.

According to Asthana, three illegal pistols and five swords have been seized from the spot.

Briefing the media persons for the first time in the aftermath of the Jahangirpuri clashes, the Delhi Police Commissioner declined the accusation that the Delhi Police is targeting only the Muslim community while picking up the accused from their houses in Jahangirpuri.

He also rejected the narrative making rounds in the social media claiming that members of one community tried to put up a flag at a particular spot even as the Shobha-Yatra was passing by a Masjid in the area on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

“Among those arrested so far are members of both the communities. The Delhi Police have no biases on the basis of community, caste, creed, etc. Arrests are being made on the basis of evidence, and with the help of CCTVs and video footages available on social media,” Asthana told media persons.

He further added – “A small issue triggered arguments between the two groups which finally led to the clashes. Our cops were present at the spot in full strength and extra forces were immediately sent as per the requisition.”

Meanwhile, as the Delhi Police Commissioner was addressing press persons at the Delhi Police Headquarters, incidents of stone pelting were reported from the very same spot which had witnessed violent clashes on Saturday.
